ONLY BEGOTTEN AND BORN AGAIN
WHAT DO THESE WORDS MEAN?
A
Study By Wanda Mason (04-18-02)
ONLY BEGOTTEN SON
John 1:18 - No man hath seen God at any time; the *only begotten
**Son, which is in the ***bosom of the Father, he hath ****declared (made known
formally or officially) him.
***bos·om
(b‹z“…m, b›“z…m) n. 1.a. The chest
of a human being. 2. The
part of a garment covering the chest or breasts. 3. The security and closeness likened to being held in a warm
familial embrace. 4. The chest considered as the source of emotion. --bos·om adj. Beloved; intimate.
****de·clare
(d¹-klâr“) v. de·clared, de·clar·ing, de·clares. --tr. 1. To
make known formally or officially. 2. To state emphatically or
authoritatively; affirm. 3. To reveal or make manifest; show. 4. To make a full statement of (dutiable goods, for
example). --de·clar“a·ble adj. --de·clar“er n.
Another way of saying this
would be:
“No man has ever
seen God at any time. Christ, who was the beloved Son of God, has officially
and formally made him known to you.”
John 3:16 - For God so loved
the world, that he gave his *only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.
*Only begotten -
monogenes, mon‑og‑en‑ace', Greek 3439; from Greek 3441
(monos) and Greek 1096 (ginomai); only‑born, i.e. sole :‑ only (begotten, child).
**Son - huios, hwee-os',
Greek 5207; apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very
widely of immed., remote or figurative kinship :- child, foal, son.
John 3:18 - He that believes
on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because
he has not believed in the *name of the *only begotten **Son of God.
*Name - onoma,
on'-om-ah, Greek 3686; from a presumed derivative of the base of Greek 1097
(ginosko) (compare Greek 3685 (oninemi)); a "name" (literal or
figurative)
[authority,
character] :- called, (+ sur-) name (-d).
The word “name” means the authority,
character or “surname,” which would be his father’s name or the great “I AM.” This would mean that
we should believe that he came “in the family name” of his/our
heavenly father.
American Heritage
Dictionary: “sur·name”
(sûr“n³m”) n. 1. A
name shared in common to identify the members of a
family, as distinguished from each member's given name. Also called family name. 2. A
nickname or an epithet added to a person's name. --sur·name tr.v. sur·named, sur·nam·ing, sur·names. To give a surname to.
So that verse could sound something like this:
“He that believes on him is not condemned: but
he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in
the FAMILY NAME of the only begotten Son of God.”
1 John 4:9 - In this was
manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his *only begotten
**Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Acts 13:33 - God has
fulfilled the same unto us, their children, in that he has raised up Jesus
again; as it is also written in the second psalm, You are my Son, this day have
I begotten thee.
There
are also many other references in the Bible talking about the “sons of God”
isn’t there? Typically, from what I’ve been taught, these sons of God were created
angelic beings so therefore they were not considered “begotten” in the
sense that we think of Jesus.
Hebrews
1:5 - For unto which of the angels said he at any time, You are my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will
be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
WHAT ABOUT ABRAHAM?
But then that brings us back to the
declaration that Abraham offered his “only begotten son.” What about Ishmael?
Hebrews 11:17 - By faith
Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the
promises offered up his *only begotten **son,
Hebrews mentions that
Abraham offered up his ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. How can this be when it is
plainly written that he had another son before Isaac whose name was Ishmael? So
what does ONLY BEGOTTEN MEAN IN THIS INSTANCE?
*Only begotten -
monogenes, mon‑og‑en‑ace', Greek 3439; from Greek 3441
(monos) and Greek 1096 (ginomai); only‑born, i.e. sole :‑ only (begotten, child).
**Son - huios, hwee-os',
Greek 5207; apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very
widely of immed., remote or figurative kinship :- child, foal, son.
It
means exactly the same thing as outlined above
regarding Christ. But is there something that we are missing in this
translation since we KNOW that Isaac was not Abraham’s only son? Could it be
that the scripture was talking about his ONLY BEGOTTEN SON because he was born of the will and spirit of God?
KJV
- Galatians 4:22-31 - For it is written, that Abraham
had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. [23] But he who was of the bondwoman was born
after the flesh; but he of the freewoman
was by promise. [24] Which things
are an allegory: for these are the two
covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which genders to bondage, which is Agar. [25] For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia,
and answers to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. [26] But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us
all.
NIV
- Galatians 4:24-26 - These things may be taken
figuratively, for the women represent two
covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are
to be slaves: This is Hagar. [25] Now
Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of
Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. [26] But the Jerusalem
that is above is free, and she is our mother.
“He was speaking of the NEW JERUSELEM.”
[27]
For it is written, Rejoice, you barren that bear not; break forth and cry, you
that travail not: for the desolate has many more children than she which has a
husband. [28] Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. [29] But as then he
that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit,
even so it is now.
He is speaking here that the children born of flesh or the natural
Jews, were persecuting the children who were born of the Spirit, or the
followers of Christ.
[30]
Nevertheless what says the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for
the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman. [31] So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
BORN
Luke
1:35 - And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon
you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that
holy thing which shall be *born of you
shall be called the Son of God.
*BORN - gennao, ghen‑nah'‑o, Greek 1080; from a variation of Greek 1085
(genos); to procreate (properly of the
father, but by extension of the mother); figurative to regenerate :‑
bear, beget, be born, bring forth, conceive, be
delivered of, gender, make, spring.
YOU MUST BE
BORN AGAIN
John 1:12-13 - But as many as received him, to them
gave he power to
become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the
will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 3:3-8 - Jesus answered
and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a man be
*born **again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. [4] Nicodemus said to him, how can a man be born when he is old?
Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? [5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say
unto you, except a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot
enter into the kingdom of God. [6] That
which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit
is spirit. [7] Marvel not that
I said unto you, you must be born again.
[8] The wind blows where it listeth, and you hear the sound thereof, but
cannot tell where it comes from, and where it goes: so is every one
that is born of the Spirit.
*Born - gennao, ghen‑nah'‑o,
Greek 1080; from a variation of Greek 1085 (genos); to procreate (properly of the father, but by
extension of the mother); figurative to regenerate :‑ bear, beget, be born, bring
forth, conceive, be delivered of, gender, make, spring.
*Again - anothen, an'-o-then,
Greek 509; from Greek 507 (ano); from above;
by analogy from the first; by implication
anew :- from
above, again, from the beginning (very first), the top.
So what is Jesus saying here when he says: “You must be born again?” We are all born into this
world of the flesh so we know that we need to be born again or in other words:
You must be “conceived, brought forth and delivered again, from above (or by the Spirit) and from the very first beginning.”
1 Peter 1:3-2:10 - Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [4] To an inheritance incorruptible, and
undefiled, and that fades not away, reserved in heaven for you, [5] Who are kept by the power of God through
faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
[10] Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and
searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto
you: [11] Searching what, or what
manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in
them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of
Christ, and the glory that should follow.
[12] Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto
themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported
unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which
things the angels desire to look into.
[23] Being born again,
not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by
the word of God, which lives and abides forever.
2:1] Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile,
and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speaking, [2] As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that
you may grow thereby: [3] If so be you
have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
[4] To whom coming, as unto a living stone,
disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, [5] You also, as
lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up
spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
[6] Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture,
Behold, I lay in Zion, a chief corner stone, elect,
and precious: and he that believes on him shall not be confounded. [7] Unto you therefore which believe he is
precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the
stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, [8] And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of
offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto
also they were appointed.
[9] But you are a chosen
generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that
ye should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into
his marvelous light: [10] Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained
mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
There is so much more that could be added to this and I
welcome any additions. I was thoroughly blessed today while doing this study
and it is by no means complete but I hope it gives you a little insight because
every time I do a study, I learn something I had never thought of in such a
way.
God bless, Wanda
